The Communion Rite
During the Communion Rite those who are properly disposed to receive Holy Communion may do so. The most significant change in the new English translation of the Communion Rite is the dialogue following the Agnus Dei or Lamb of God. The priest says, “Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.” The people respond, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” Notice the greater emphasis on biblical language in both parts; the words of John the Baptist at Jesus’ baptism ‘the Lamb who takes away sin’, Holy Communion described as a participation in the heavenly “supper of the Lamb” from the book of Revelation, and the direct quote of the Centurion’s words, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,” from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.
